- - Sara and Martin Simons welcomed a healthy baby boy on a very blissful, balmy October night. After seventeen hours of a tough and painful delivery, Matthew Andrew Simons entered the world. While Sara was happy with any gender, it made Martin ecstatic that his first child was a boy -- from that point on he would have that clichéd, pass-on-the-family-name sort of attitude for his little son. That didn’t, however, get in the way of his relationship with Matthew. The two were incredibly close as Matt grew. Martin taught him to play baseball, how to tie his shoes, and he instilled his good hearted morals in him. Matthew would often spend hours hanging out with his dad, just wishing he could be like him. He looked up to his big, strong, protective father, and that’s just how Matt wanted to be when he was a daddy.
Then, one day after driving home from working late at the office, Martin was hit head on by a drunk driver. He was killed instantly, Matt remembered the police officer saying to his mother that evening. Although he was only nine years old at the time, Matt remembered a terrible, dreary, and gloomy feeling hanging over the Simons household for weeks. His mother wouldn’t eat at times, and pretty soon she decided that this wasn’t the environment to raise her child in. During the summer before he turned eleven, Matt went to live with his uncle in Aspen, Colorado. His father’s brother lived a little differently than he was used to, and it was hard to adjust to his way of life. Matt, who was used to having a schedule of when to do things, now found that his Uncle Tim did things whenever he saw fit. It was a madhouse at first -- breakfast foods for dinner, naptimes in the morning, grocery shopping on a Wednesday afternoon -- yes, it was tough to see Uncle Tim’s madness. Eventually, after a few years of this, Matt got acquainted with is new life. He hadn’t thought about his mother or father in a while now, and things were just starting to seem normal. It never is easy for a child to grow up normally after they lose a parent at a young age, however Tim did the best he could for his nephew.
By the time Matthew entered high school he was proved himself to be an average joe -- neither popular nor picked on by the popular kids. He got average grades and played average in baseball and football. His Uncle Tim was extremely supportive of him, though, and often encouraged him to find something that he excelled at. During his junior year his elderly guidance counselor asked him what he would like to do after he graduated. Truth be told, Matt hadn’t really thought about it much. His Uncle Tim suggested he do what his father did and become a police officer. At first the idea was brushed off rather quickly. Matt didn’t want to be another one of those kids that followed in his parent’s footsteps, and on top of that his father was gone. Tim didn’t budge with his urging though. Finally it came down to it and Matt decided that a career in law enforcement might not be such a bad idea after all.
Matt decided to move back to Lake Walters to be near his mother after he graduated. There he got accepted into the police academy and began his studies. Sara was very supportive of her son’s goals and encouraged him immensely. Matt always thought it was because he reminded her of Martin. She had told him once that he was a chip off the old block and that made him proud. Soon Matt had passed the police academy, and he got a job as an officer working for the Lake Walters Police Department. He absolutely loves his job and can’t imagine doing anything else. Matthew is quite happy in life right now.
